    Ligeti, György Sándor (1923-2006)

Today's BaL was an excellent summary of this sensation composer. The two sets, Sony & Warner represent an easy way to have an almost complete overview of his music - although I see that the 7 CD Sony set is currently only available via separate CDs. I bought it new for about £16 some years ago and it is now listed on Amazon at £199!

I still enjoy Abbado's Wien Modern DG CD that has Atmosphères & Lontano on it.

The Boulez CD is keen, too. There's also a multi-artist single CD DG compilation that is worthwhile.

I have an fascinating 'Warp Works & Twentieth Century Masters' CD featuring the London Sinfonietta containing an interesting live version of the Chamber Concerto.

I don't know the BIS releases and I'd forgotten about them. Thanks for the reminder.

Especially Fredrik Ullén's recording of the piano Etudes (which I'm not that keen on mostly, along with Ligeti's later output in general, as I've said on the thread about the recent Ligeti radio programme). I particularly like Hannu Lintu's recentish recording of orchestral pieces, and the other day I was listening to Eötvös's recording of the Requiem, which gives quite a different perspective on it from previous ones.

Yes, Fredrik Ullén's accounts of those studies are indeed excellent. Apparently, he had a conversation with the composer about the Sorabji 100 Transcendental Studies which he's also recording (five of seven CDs are already out) and told me that Ligeti was aware of them, which surprised me in terms of how he might have gotten hold of any of them (too late to ask now, sadly!)...

I thought it might be appropriate to bump this thread on what would have been Ligeti's 100th birthday. I've marked the occasion by listening for the first time in a while to what used to be one of my favourite Ligeti discs, David Atherton and the London Sinfonietta playing Melodien, the Double Concerto and Chamber Concerto. I'm not sure these have ever been equalled.

In case anyone else is interested in listening on this day:

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I somehow missed out on that one. Good to see that it is available to download losslessly from the Decca ADRM CD release. Though I do have the DG triple CD album which carries the Atherton recording of Melodien.

Listened again last night on Qobuz and still loved it! The Double Concerto I encored.

The last time I listened to anything by Ligeti it was the solo violin sonata. This piece had been a bit of a challenge to me in fact, I thought it was pretty boring. But there was a new release by Nurit Stark about 18 months ago, and so I gave it another chance - and loved it. Whether it was the performance or just my mood at the time, I cannot say. But I can say that I like this music now as much as the Bartok.
