      Bloody train strike tomorrow .

Anyway, yes, hopefully lot of lovely Lennie at this years Proms. Perhaps a Proms premiere of Kaddish.

I rather like Bernstein's lesser known works like Dybuk etc. I do hope that the proms season this year features his lesser known music.

A rare chance to hear Bernstein’s song-cycle Songfest and his Plato-inspired Serenade in a concert launched with the fireworks of Candide’s Overture.

All Bernstein concert, on the radio Monday night , 7.30

When is a Radio 3 going to play his Songfest?

This feels like the wrong forum to mention that I have almost all of West Side Story memorised and sometimes find myself singing random bits of it to myself at unexpected moments >.>

... one of the cod-definitions of a Gentleman/Lady used to be "someone who knew how to play the banjo, but didn't".

I think the same might hold for admitting knowledge of - let alone the singing bits of - West Side Story ...

                      .

[ ... also, knows how to whistle, but doesn't... ]

WSS is as fine a work for the theatre as Carmen - I don't understand why you should feel that such a comment is incorrectly placed on a Forum that has a 40+ post strong Thread devoted to Bernstein-as-composer?

There seems to be at times a tendency among the more musically literate to disparage musicals—I'm glad some people here are not engaging in that practice.

Well - quite a lot of Musicals do tend towards the sentimental (and even WSS has its moments) which thoroughly deserve such disparagement. Having "taught" an "A"-level "The Musical, 1940 - 1990" option for many years, I enjoyed being able to select and discuss in detail some of the very best examples.

I know exactly what you mean - I must have seen it on TV late 60s/early70s, and many numbers stuck in my head, especially America and Maria, by turns exhilarating and joyfully uplifting. Dad played piano in the clubs and had requests for them all the time, so I heard him practice them at home when I was in bed (likewise Sound of Music, Camelot etc...)... I loved recalling them in my head, and probably did sing them aloud too...

At one time I would dream about The Sound of Music (usually that specific opening number) and would wake up with tears of joy streaming down my face, thinking too of the birds, the hills and the woods.... I think it was one of the most formative influences, along with 60s pop, on my being, or becoming, a music lover....
