For those of us who were lucky enough to attend a performance of 'Sternklang' in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham in the early 90s, in Midsummer eve, controlled by the composer with the CBSO, and completely free, utterly amazing, and long in the memory. I think that most of the crowd were rat-arsed, but this did wonders for the whole thing. Unfortunately, attempts to acquire a recording thereafter have not be successful

Nonetheless, I have become a complete Karl Heinz Stockhausen dude, and have a lot of his work on my shelves, including 'Stimmung' (Singcircle), 'Gruppen' for three orchestras with bawdy Claude on DG, and 'Aus den sieben Tagen'. Again, attempts to purchase a Licht cycle on CD still elude me: I did see a recording of 'Montag', 'Donnerstag' and 'Samstag' on the shelves in an agreeable Berlin shop, but this was very expensive as it was the Verlage edition on KS's own label, and I am still holding out for the DG original issue.

In the meantime, I shall have to be contented with Rattle and the CBSO in Brum, conducting Stravinsky Agon, Messiaen and two doses of 'Gruppen' shortly before he went off to Berlin in 1997

The only ones DG released were Donnerstag and Samstag; for all the others you have to get Stockhausen's own releases. Yes they are expensive, but the money doesn't go to a cash-grabbing multinational media corporation, but to the people running the Stockhausen operation and continuing to promote his work and legacy, which isn't such a bad cause I think.

            Worby sees the Light!

            Weds 27 July
10pm - Then There Was Light

Robert Worby, a fellow composer and friend of Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007), goes on a personal journey to find out why Licht, the avant-garde German composer's 1977-2003 cycle of seven operas, divides critics and audiences.

For those of us who missed this the first time around.

Really enjoying this performance of Klavierstuck XII

Klavierstück XII is in three large sections, corresponding to the three "Examinations" in act 1, scene 3 of Donnerstag aus Licht (1979), from which the piano...

I like the comment someone's left -- Klingt wie ein durchgeknallter Scriabine.

In his 2002 Stockhausen course in Kurten, Richard Toop discussed the Elektronische musik mit tonszenen from Freitag. What is that exactly? (Oh, just seen the answer on wiki!)

How technical are the lectures? Is there enough in it to interest a non technical reader like me? It's quite an expensive purchase, and can't be returned.

Overheard an anecdote, that when Stockhausen was pressed by a young composer as to how he had composed Kontakte, he replied "Kontakte et l'eau de là" - by which I understand 'water from the beyond' ...................

Possibly 'L'AU-DELA' which means 'the hereafter'?
