Visceral masterpieces, as potent as the day they were written, the Arditti/Pace concert of the chamber works has been a mouth-watering must-see event that I've been eagerly anticipating for the past three months. I hope the Beeb's mics will be there for everyone who can't be!

In some parallel universe, the Beeb sent their cameras so that everyone could share the high jinks of Irvine Arditti's struggles with the Huddersfield Music Stands (ominously labelled "Huddersfield Polytechnic Music Department"!) one of which refused to stay in position, and the Quartets' chair-scraping pantomime, all of which added to the joy of one of the highlights of a fantastic Festival.

Xenakis (et al) for dummies
Over the past 3 days or so I have interpolated a fair bit of my Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Edgar Varese, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Luigi Nono CDs into my playlist.
If I liked that, what else should I try?
About 20 years ago I bought a number of CDs with some birthday money and one of them was a Xenakis CD. I'd never heard of him, sounded interesting. Thought he might be Greek. Played it twice. Utterly confused. Didn't play it again. Can't find it. Must be lost. I only have O-level maths.Comment

Xenakis is one of the most accessible composers IMV
you don't have to understand the whole Stochastic thing at all
Last year I showed a class of 10 year olds this
then put this on their computer suite
showed them some of this
and one of the children said
"hey, you can design music like you can design a building"
What's so hard about it ?
IMV people confuse something being difficult to play with being difficult to understand
(but he does like to have his titles in Klingon)
