The power and strength of his music is quite awe inspiring and he is in no way just another Shostakovich imitator, his musical influences were much wider and his style quite individually forged. I listened to some works which were new to me, for some reason I'd never heard the Piano Trio before, all I can say is that I was bowled over by it, what a terrific, powerful work. Even an apparently lightweight work like the Partita for piano is full of fascinating invention.

I've been listening to some recent downloads from Qobuz on Naxos of symphonies 6, 12, 17 & 19. My first real dip into Weinberg, proper (thanks Rob et al for the info and enthusio!).

But I want to check out the string quartets. Just dip my toe.

Where to start? Three recommendations would be good.

I've been eying up a download of the Piano Qunitet coupled with the 7th string quartet (Hi-Res download, Salajczyk, Silesian Quartet). The PQ is a given, but what's the view on the 7th SQ?

One of the great Quartet cycles IMHO BeefO,up there with Haydn,LvB,Bartock,DSCH.
                            Basically pick any 3.
Yes 7 is a good start but I would suggest 5,12 and the heartbreaking 16th,plenty of what David Fanning calls 'desolate wandering' in those,if that is your thing (it is mine).
