I believe I was present at a live performance of this last week -

Poem for Chairs, Tables, Benches, etc. (1960), chairs, tables, benches and unspecified sound sources

    It may have been recorded.

Somewhere on this forum I posted about the LMY concert I went to in New York in the summer of 2015... I wonder where that is? (the post, not New York)

Can't locate - your first post seems to be Sept 2016 - did you have a former existence?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

I did take a few months off last year but I was around before that.

                That's karma for you.

My post about LMY may have been somewhere in "What was your last concert?"

Richard, I see from the Xenakis thread that your earlier RB identity is now a guest - which means it has been deleted. That is only done when members specifically request it. Otherwise they can just go away … No way to recover data on deleted accounts.

                    Never mind.

Well, in June 2015 I was in NYC for a couple of weeks, and, wishing to take full advantage of whatever was going on during my visit, I went to the Dia Arts Foundation in Chelsea to see LMY and Marian Zazeela with their disciple Jung Hee Choi performing Young's version of North Indian raga-based music. Listeners were asked to remove their shoes on entering the space, which was carpeted throughout, with no seats, and contained a slowly-changing light installation plus a pair of enormous speaker cabinets, on which the (pre-recorded) tambura drones could be heard. (It sounded as if no expense had been spared when putting the sound system together.) After what seemed like a very long time, the musicians entered and began to sing. LMY himself seemed very frail and looked as if he was suffering from advanced arthritis. Nevertheless, once the performance began, it was clear that this hadn't affected his musical faculties at all. I wouldn't know to what distance the music was developed from that of the gharana to which LMY's teacher Pandit Pran Nath belonged, except that it would often involve an almost polyphonic relationship between all three voices, rather than the unisons and imitations between two voices familiar from the dhrupad style. However that may be, the idea of a "theatre of eternal music" came across strongly. The drones were still sounding after the performers (and audience) left the space. I guess I would have preferred, given the choice, to have heard some of LMY's own music, but his commitment to an authentic approach to Indian music is beyond doubt I think.

                      Gramavision, 1987.

A set of 320kb mp3 files for this way OOP set is available here:

MediaFire is a simple to use free service that lets you put all your photos, documents, music, and video in a single place so you can access them anywhere and share them everywhere.

In the absence of any proper re-issue this, for me, is an acceptable compromise.

Though not quite up to the audio quality offered by the New Year Radio 3 HD Sound offering of the morning of 3rd January 2016. I am given to understand that the rights to broadcast that made a fair old dent in the Radio 3 budget and the files the braodcast was made form were very closely guarded.
