Well done PG! A most excellent choice.

The owners must have died - who would be mad enough to give it away ???

Actually , I hope your friends have not been recycling it

Why have I never, nor can I now appreciate Elgar at all? Given the place he seems to have in national music-making, I do not get it.
Many singers I know beg for another Gerontius. If I never Hear Gerontius again, it'll be too soon. And that cello concerto.........and Enigma....erm....

Each to their own, Draco. Don't worry - at least you've tried.

Exactly, how can Elgar not light his candle?

The sadly passed away, Jeffrey Tate's EMI recording of Sospiri, and Symphony no. 2 with the LSO will surely allow the light to flood in to even the darkest recesses...

It's been re-mastered/re-issued in several formats over the years. Some charity shop copies may well be 'spares', those donating them having upgraded or otherwise gained additional copies.

It doesn't necessarily have to involve death - having subsequently obtained the Barbirolli Elgar, and/or a Du Pre box (or been given a duplicate single CD) the doners have decided to allow charities to benefit from their abundance of riches.

Yes, that's my reference copy although I've hung on to its first appearance on cd complete with receipt from Baumerster Books. Much as I love the SACD version, it does reduce Sir John's moaning and groaning as well as the clatter on the final chord of the 'cello concerto.

Please don't say that. To whom am I to give my 44 Complete Elgar Edition volumes when I'm dead?

... o, I had hoped you had passed on the genes / memes to others in your family, who would be keen to carry on the flame?

In any case I suspect I'm a bit older than you - so it'll probably be you inheriting my Couperin, d' Anglebert, and Froberger scores...
