Personally I don't think any UK composer of the first third of the 20th century wrote anything as original a reflection of its time and place as PH's Kammermusik series, to which I would add the early operas, I've already mentioned Cardillac but actually for me the most memorable is Sancta Susanna, as authentic an Expressionist statement as Caligari or the paintings of Max Beckmann.Numquam Satis!

I seem to remember somebody had (or was about to) arranged the Symphonic Metamorphoses for bras/brass and wind ensemble ... ?
And there's the Symphony in Bb for Band, too:

This DG 20th Century Classics CD has been in my collection for about 26 years (some ten years after ferney attended a concert performance of op.50!).
Listening to Op.50 as I type. It is even better than I remember!

Don't forget this invaluable historical set, especially fine for the symphonic performances...
The mono sound is fine.
Very fond of the String Quartets, especially the Kocian Quartet cycle on Praga. They take some getting into but once in, you'll dwell among such adventurous and inventive music for days, as you might with the Bartok or Shostakovich sets....
If you can find the Hollywood String Quartet's recording of No.3, go get - it's a true classic, with excellent couplings...(Prokofiev 2, Walton).
...and here it is...
Buy Hollywood String Quartet, The - String Quartet No 2 & 3 & A by Hindemith, Paul, Prokofiev, Sergey, Walton, William, The Hollywood String Quartet from Amazon's Classical Music Store. Everyday low prices and free delivery on eligible orders.
I enjoy the less well-known Symphonies, especially the Serena (Tortelier/Chandos, or Kegel/Brilliant, originally on Berlin Classics, are excellent), but would probably return more readily to the Kammermusiken, now, with either Chailly or Abbado...Last edited by jayne lee wilson; 17-02-17, 20:48.

But the all-Hindemith CD looks very attractive.

And fans of Glenn Gould might want to investigate his recordings of the various sonatas for solo piano and piano and various brass.
This set (which I thoroughly recommend) also comes with the gorgeous "Das Marienleben'' op27 for Soprano & Piano (1922-23)
