    MacCunn, Hamish

Ok, so most people will associate Hamish MacCunn with one solitary composition: The Land of the Mountain and the Flood. I've always had a soft spot for this work he composed when a student. There isn't much else available on record, though Hyperion issued excerpts from his opera Jeanie Deans, some 20 years ago.

When Simon the Heffer was doing his first British Music series a few years back he played a piece other than TLOTMATF ... I rather enjoyed it .... Can't for the life of me remember what is was ....

BBC MM CD Vol 24 No 4 includes
Land of the Mountain and the Flood [sic] (BBCSSO/Vänskä)
        and
The Ship o' the Fiend (BBCSSO/Brabbins)
        (together with lots of Butterworth).
Probably some unwanted copies around in charity shops; I couldn't track down any copies on Amazon.

Both are available on this Hyperion CD:

          Shouldn't it be "MacCunn"?

Anyway, not very much on youTube other than the familiar (and thoroughly enjoyable) overture - but there is this a capella choral piece:

National Youth Choir of Scotland performing live on Radio 3 - In Tune at City Halls, Glasgow. 24 September.

And Sutherland's Law is still available on DVD, too

I used to have the Alexander Gibson version on LP, a sort of UK concept album

MacCunn was a pupil of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford of course at the RCM! One of its first pupils I believe.

Yes that's a rather nice cd.
I used to have a Halle encores LP that included the Mountain and Flood

It's a piece I've played many times. Of course, in true orchestral player irreverence, it's known as 'Land of the fountain and the mud'. It's a lovely work to play although I believe the viola part is VERY hard!

You mean it isn't just repeated quavers?
