    Pfitzner, Hans

    I'm a pfan.

New discovery today, and I'm knocked out by it: Pfitzner's E minor violin sonata, as played by Benjamin Schmid and Claudius Tanski.

In the past I have also been bowled over by the op 39 (C Sharp minor) quartet.

I'd certainly like to get to know the songs at some time.

I only 'know' the preludes from Palestrina.
Memory now so addled that I can't remember if I've seen a performance or not.
I'm pretty sure that I have: Covent Garden?

Ah Palestrina, I've owned the DGG recording since 1973 so I suppose its about time I listened to it. Probably missing some good stuff.

Don't know how I came across Palestrina - 30 or 40 years ago! Probably Radio 3 (or its then name), only possibly Radio 4 (Dessert Island Discs? - probably not). I do recall there was one scene/passage which I found very dramatic and engaging - I must revisit this, after all those years.

The first of the Preludes was played this morning - either at the tail-end of TTN or at the start of Breakfast - I was half awake.

I largely ignored Pfitzner for several decades, being mainly aware of his name thanks to Private Eye's erstwhile classical music pundit, Hans Killer, whose articles usually began "Not since Pfitzner ....". In the last few years I have become a bit of a convert, largely thanks to the indefatigable efforts of the German cpo label. First I got the Complete Songs on 5CDs and found much to discover and enjoy. I then purchased the Chamber Works from jpc who own cpo and had a good price, especially pre Brexit, (still good value). (to nit pick - C Sharp minor quartet is op 36).

With a Germanist's curiosity I even recently acquired the massive cantata/orchestral song cycle Von deutscher Seele in a Berlin performance with Ingo Metzmacher on Capriccio.

He seems to have been rather accommodating to the Nazi régime, if I remember correctly, or (like f'rinstance Scmidt) at least obsessive about either safeguarding or retaining a "pure" Germanic musical culture - but that came later, of course. .
