    Svetlanov the composer

I've just ordered his 1st Symphony (on a whim, for a couple of quid from amazon).
Apparently his music is highly regarded in Russia.
Does anyone on here know this piece or any of ES's works?
    Roehre maybe?

There are some orchestral works of his which have been recorded, exclusively by himself.
His style is very derivative, but without any doubt through and through Russian.
I haven't got a recording of these works, but was able to hear that 1st symphony some 15 years ago live (Svetlanov conducting, IIRC not a Russian orchestra).

Thanks as always Roehre,I just knew you would have heard it !

      This is the one

There is also a 3CD box which includes a piano concerto amongst other things, but it's a bit pricey to order on a whim.

The Piano Concerto seems to be available on Spotify. You can do a free subscription and hear it

http://open.spotify.com/track/6ZTbCiAa15Bhod8J6BkgxX Symphony 2, Peter's Chimes - these perhaps not composed by Svetlanov

These might be some of Svetlanov's compositions - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yevgeny_Svetlanov gives a cross check perhaps.

I couldn't track the piano concerto mentioned in msg 4 - but that most likely means I can't find it. There are a lot of works conducted by Svetlanov in Spotify.

Some more of that 4 ( or 3 ?) CD set is available on spotty.

The siberian fantasy, for example, and the Preludes and Daugava. just search Siberian Fantasy.

List of the music on that box set.

Heres his page on a Russian composers site. which shows some of his works that have been recorded.

I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

              Many thanks guys,appreciated.
I rather like this music and can understand why it's popular in Russia,I wonder if the piano concerto is a warhorse over there.
              It's a big Rachmaninov/Liszt type thing.
Lots of other influences I think,Borodin,Glazunov even a hint of DSCH in the symphony.

I found this on Napster - with Scriabin symphony 3 "Divine Poem" - http://app.rhapsody.com/artist/saint...exander-skryab

Can't quite figure out the conductor (not Svetlanov) nor the pianist. How I dislike web sites which simply put up a picture of an LP or CD cover, and expect one to glean the information from that. Unfortunately most of the sites which refer to this CD do the same. Amazon - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Yevgeny-Svet.../dp/B006M6IAN0 and AllMusic is similar.

Maybe there was another disc with a coupling of Svetlanov's and Scriabin's piano concertos.

That AFAIK is Alexander Dmitriev (or something similar)

Indeed, and armed with that information we can see it on Spotify too - http://open.spotify.com/track/09MmRlxsUqlqUH2KCqhY4X

We can also discover the other important peformer - the pianist Vladimir Ovchinnikov.

Yes, I saw this but was more attracted by the 3 disc set which up until a few days ago was selling on AmUK for £7.40. My tardiness meant that when I came to place an order on 1st March the price had more than quadrupled so I baulked.

However, at the back of my mind I was sure that somewhere in my collection I had some Svetlanov compositions. These took a while to locate (I am in the middle of reconfiguring my study/music room and items are spread about the house a bit), but I found them in the Evgeny Svetlanov Edition (discs 9 and 10) which is part of the Brilliant Classics Historical Russian Archives series (detailed contents in one of the ''reviews' in the link below). I do not know whether these are the same performances as in the Warner box.

The cheapest I have seen this set is £19.85 delivered from Amazon Germany.

Yes, this music is derivative but it has good tunes and is well orchestrated - perhaps over-orchestrated in parts - but it is so typical of the genre, and the performances are very characteristic of the Russian nationalistic idiom. Recording quality overall is much better than in many other editions in the series. This is music to indulge (wallow?) in at least occasionally.

As far as I know, just the B minor Opus 13. There were some symphonic poems and orchestral suites.

                              Yes just the one Symphony.

Thanks hafod for the Russian archive box link, some duplication for me though.

I'm sure I read somewhere that he has a star named after him.
