A bit of a surprise.... I think that Thomas Ades name had been bandied about at the time Max was appointed. I was thinking it might be him. Another was James Macmillan
    who sprang to mind.

but they don't really want someone from that world (unfortunately IMV)
No - and I don't think there are many good composers who would really want to take the job.

You seem to be suggesting tokenism is a good thing; or have I misunderstood your point?

If it were up to me I'd do away with the position. And the monarchy too, come to think of it. I don't know JW personally but I've never found anything of interest in her music. (And, looking down the list, that goes for her predecessors too, with the exception of PMD.)

I think you misunderstand the point that just over 50% of the population have never featured.
There are plenty of highly accomplished women composers

Charlie is a total disaster area, lets hope he is outlasted by his (dull dull dull) mother
better still do away with the whole nonsense and have something imaginative instead

So who else would you suggest folks ?

I don't know how many pieces of music we can name by composers in their capacity as MQM, personally I can only think of two - which is not to say there aren't a lot more. I would think most of Elgar's overtly "royal" music was written before he became MQM.

Prince "Heaven forbid that I should listen to classical music" William? That Prince William? I wonder who'll be Master of the King's Music when he takes over. If he does.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Peter Noone would be my choice, what with his musical /royalty connections.

Followed swiftly by abolition of the whole illogical nonsense of monarchy.

(Does princess middleton speak common, seeing as she's a commoner?)
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

It's a special appointment made by the Monarch. It's an honorary position bestowed upon a figure who's achieved eminence in their field. No specific duties are attached.

Is the Queen making a political statement by recently choosing to appoint Scots (Carol Ann Duffy and Judith Weir) to both of these two official Royal posts?

Are any three women now allowed to be a triumvirate? Equality has come a long way, and maybe a step too far!
