Me too. Lovely stuff eh? I'd had him down as a sort of Glazunov precursor, but Taneyev was a much better and more interesting composer.

I've been championing Taneyev to my musical friends for several years now. They're gradually coming round. I'd bundle him with Weinberg and Arensky as composers who have been sadly neglected for far too long. Judging by the recent spate of recordings, Weinberg's day has perhaps come, but the other two still lag behind.

I knew a bit but am also enjoying this.

Nothing patronising from Donald M (there was one sentence from him today including references to the balalaika and to Reynaldo Hahn in a gondola - no spoon feeding, just stated... if the listener didn't get it, it was a spur to further investigation. Good stuff)

I certainly found Taneyev more appealing than Reger (and jackhammers more appealing than Glazunov), but not quite appealing enough that anything stuck in the memory. Rarely seem to go "Hmm, perhaps I'll listen to some Taneyev today". The complete string quartets on NFlowers are somewhere in my collection, possibly I'll re-assess them at some point.

I agree,although I'll believe Weinberg's day has come when his symphonies are played on Radio 3 or in concerts.
I love Taneyev,I have a few of the Naxos cds,Symphonies and String Quartets,well crafted stuff full of great tunes.

You may think you've heard the last movement of his 1st Symphony before,think Stravinsky's Petrushka.

The Suite de Concert in the Oistrakh recording is a Taneyev plum.

I have a friend who is always trying to get me to listen to Taneyev--he is a musician and has played on a couple of discs of his music--and for whatever reason I just don't take the bait. The proverbial Chinese Food Composer--pleasant enough going down but nothing memorable about it.

It's interesting to compare Taneyev and Weinberg. Both had talent and were greatly overshadowed by their proximity to truly great Composers. In Weinberg's case DSCH, Taneyev by Tchaikovsky and other Russian Romantics. I think that Weinberg wrote some truly memorable music (unfortunately, he was so prolific that it takes some effort to sort out the nuggets from the more routine works). For both Composers The Great Was The Enemy Of The Good.
