4th November Composer of the Week Dame Ethel Smyth

Don't be put off by Beecham's cheap jibes. She was friends with many musicians when she moved to Germany.

She fought her father to be allowed to have a career in music, wrote a number of fascinating books about her life
and I'm ashamed to say that I know very little of her music but hope to rectify that this week.

She was born in Sidcup, then deepest Kent and two miles from here.

Don't know whether this is a repeat but worth a listen.

Ah, so you know! ( - See Stormy Weather board).

Today's programe started with a robust orchestral fugue, and Nielsen's music came immediately to my mind.

Thanks Rob, I triedto record iton a tape but I haven't taped anything for solong it won't work.

I'll have to catch it on IPlayer Mind boggling that she knew/met Tchaikovsky, Brahms and many more and they had time for her.

She also wrote well about her life, here and in Germany.

Just in case anyone is interested,
some of her autobiography titles [ better than they sound]

                      Impressions that Remained

That movement from the Serenade, played at the end of yesterday's programme - terrible quality recording btw, and I thought the music taken too slowly - but, once again, strongly reminscent of early Nielsen! I wonder what Robert Simpson made of her work - if anything.
