    It’s Lully: 21-25 October

    Did I hear that next week’s Composer of the Week would be Frantz Liszt? I was very much looking forward to this;

    Very much Lully in my Radio Times, happily...
    "...the isle is full of noises,
    Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
    Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

      Have you had a bad experience with Liszt, Cali? Thinking about some of your other likes, I'm wondering what you could have listened to, to put you off so?

            I hardly know where to start, Throppers

            To read a great musician's take on Liszt, try pp133-147 of Brendel's "The Veil of Order". At a recent concert Peter Donohoe prefaced a performance of the whole of Années year 2 with an eloquent little speech about Liszt which commented sadly on the Cali-Throppers view of him. Your loss

            I'm currently working my way through the Hyperion Leslie Howard complete Liszt piano works....

              7.30 pm: Here it is again. James Jolly has just said ‘Next week’s composer of the week is Frantz Liszt’. Has nobody else heard it? I can’t be my radio (or me…)?

                Your words chasten me some, RT. Perhaps you may take comfort in the fact that it took a long time for me to click with Mozart. Now he is fast becoming sovereign for me.

                Though one cannot like all music, and one should not have to apologise for one's æthetics mores. Though perhaps one should desist in slighting the æsthetic pleasures of others. (It was, however, only meant as a bit of Friday night hi-jinx (and an 'in' joke), nothing more).

                  Crumbs... Thropps took some incoming on this while I was away! I just don't like much of what I've heard, especially the orchestral music... and anything with octave tremolos etc...It's just a personal thing, like not liking someone's tone of voice or attitude. But I'll take this up 'offline' RT - I've been 'warned' once before for this!

                    all round! My advice to start with some of the piano music, carefully selected!

                            Oi!

                            Seriously, Liszt was CoW not that long ago. Though it would take more than one week to do justice to his remarkable life , one of the most extraordinary of any composer of his or any other day. The format barely scratches the surface.
