Radio 3's longest-running programme is 70 today. Long-time presenter Donald Macleod reflects on a truly unique show

      Please do
      AND
please lets have some suggestions to R3
      from me it would be

      Trevor Wishart
      Pauline Oliveros
      La Monte Young
      Denis Smalley
      Alvin Lucier
      Meredith Monk
      Eliane Radigue
      Frank Denyer
      Xenakis

And it seems from the list

that John Cage hasn't been ? which is mighty odd IMV
      neither has Morton Feldman

and NO George Crumb ? who wrote one of the greatest string quartets of the last century

Good list, MrGG. I wonder if anyone at the Beeb had the idea of celebrating the 70th anniversary of the programme by featuring only composers who also celebrate their seventieth birthdays this year?

I've already been in touch with the COTW website. For me, one name is paramount... Bo Holten.

                      Rubbish.

                      Newman, every time!

Edit: Altered from "Randy any day"

Although my name's not Andre Hodeir, I'd root for Jean Barraqué - it's probable that the whole of his acknowledged, finished oeuvre would fit into 1 week on COTW.

                            - in fact, there'd be room for some of the juvenilia, too - and a fair bit of "chat" (preferably from Paul Griffith).

Meanwhile, in the considerably duller "real world", CotW is ... Scarlatti.

It's all about the bicentennial of the Royal Philharmonic Society this week, and I am currently being reminded by the slowest version of the scherzo of Beethoven 9 I have ever heard how often Ludwig failed to recognise enough when it is.

One supposes COTW is the right place for this to be the topic...
