What really gets me about Jonathan Keates is his -if I may be permitted- self-consciously posh declamatory style. I simply think it's great.
I had heard him also give a Purcell talk ages back and it was really engaging. The emphasis he gives to his phrases is startling. He's thoroughly trenchant, I'd call it.
Nevertheless his chat with Donald suffers a bit from a fairly common problem in that the interviewer already knows a hefty amount about the subject so that the questions are often preemptive and self-answering. Usually this would annoy me, as it often is done in a patronising manner. But Jonathan is a joy to listen to, even if you know the stuff already.
