Wot, no discussion of this week's CotW?

I have not managed to catch up with all the episodes yet, and I found my knowledge of Gounod's life was almost nil. I look forward to learning more. I had no idea of his long stays in England, nor of the notoriety which attended him.

Interesting CotW-series. I caught up the day before yeaterday.
Not many surprises in terms of the musical illustrations (A couple of songs, the choral works Gallia, Mors et Vita, the opera 5 Mars the only "new" pieces for me), but the biographical information was very, very interesting I have to say.
And if you are in for a nice surprise: Friday's episode with the Petite Symphonie and especially the String quartet in a shows that he wasn't an exclusively vocal/choral composer.

It was a pity that only a movement from the 2nd Symphony was included in Monday's programme. Both his numbered symphonies are delightful and still not well enough known. As they are both under 30 minutes I'm sure time could have been found for one of them complete in the series, or on 'innessential classics' beforehand.
