    COTW - Jommelli

    I hadn't.

Last time this happened to me was years ago with Arvo Part and I thought someone was pulling my leg, and that he didn't really exist.

    Anyone got any Jommelli CDs?

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Haven't played it for ages vints, I recall I did like it. It's the only thing of his I have and is coupled with a Frescobaldi and Sances. I've found a link and you can listen to clips here:

Anna: is that the same as JR Hartley's Agonia Fishing?

Has anyone ever calculated the proportion of minor baroque and eighteenth-century composers on COTW (who leave me cold) to nineteenth-century ones? My impression is that the period from, say, 1840 to 1914, gets short shrift on this programme. Whenever there is a nineteenth-century composer, it seems to be a well-known one.

(This may be tosh, and I look forward to several people telling me so. )

I don't think most of the baroque and eighteenth-century composers features are 'minor', though I admit I hadn't heard of this one.

What's a 'minor' composer, anyway? Nobody thought much of Bach for quite a long time.

                      (Composers Variously Rated, anyone?)

Clearly, re vinteuil's post on, erm, another thread, Johann Rosenmüller should be a candidate for COTW soon, should put DM through his paces. I take it I have the right one, I played a duet of his arranged for 2 guitars once.

It’s a name not often heard even on TTN. Whoever decided to make the programme, I am very much impressed. But as usual, there is no online listing of what we shall be hearing, so for those who are curious, here is what Presto Classical is offering.

                              This looks promising:
Jommelli: Lamentazioni per il Mercoledi santo
Véronique Gens (soprano) Gérard Lesne (coountertenor),
                              Il Seminario Musicale, Christophe Rousset
This page lists all recordings of Lamentazioni per il Mercoledi santo by Niccolò Jommelli (1714–74).

                              Anna
coupled with a Frescobaldi and Sances
                              .
This must be worth having. Come to that, how about a CoW on Sances?
