Well, in the case of Scott of t'Antarctic and The First of t'Few; I do, for one! And, if I know a film that I've never seen before has a score by John Barry or Ennio Morricone, my time won't be completely wasted.

Seems that everyone is overlooking the fact that John Williams has quite a catalogue of concert music with little or no connection to a film or films
and that as a conductor he has quite a good reputation with orchestras and critics.

Fair point, although it should be pointed out that "everyone" includes the compilers of these programmes, who have not included these works apart from the Air and Simple Variations which, IMO, demonstrate less skill and invention than his film scores.

Yes; but this isn't really relevant to a discussion about whether or not JW should feature on a series called Composer of the Week.

Cowan did a reasonable job with his hour of film music last Sunday morning, but a whole week of John Williams' film music is much too much.

They have got the response they wanted though - an unusually lengthy thread for COTW.

When is Claudia Winkleman moving to Radio 3?

(I stopped going to the cinema when the number of f words started to exceed an average 90 minutes at Millwall)

Maybe you should just choose your films more carefully. I didn't hear any f words in The Hobbit. Or Life of Pi. Or Schindler's List. Or E.T., or Tinker, Tailor, or Les Mis.....I would give you a full list but I fear it would be a very long one.....

Besides the music for the Obama inauguration music we have had or will get the concertos for Flute, Horn, Violin and Bassoon with the Olympic fanfare too.

I hope your longer list will be more accurate than the short list Mr Pee -

The sound of it is something quite atrocious!

Sorry, it was Mary Poppins but she was "bloody good" in that too apparently!

How shocking. A Nazi using the F-word. Makes his other misdemeanours seem positively trivial.....

Ah, but that wasn't the argument you were putting forward, was it? There are more f words in each hour of film than there are in each hour of people being in/on shops, hospitals, nature walks, libraries, offices etc.

You have a talent with pictures. Maybe you could make a good film?

Well, there aren't, are there? That's a ridiculous generalisation.

There is a lot of adult language in certain films, just as there is on certain TV shows- The Sopranos, Game of Thrones, etc., but like their film equivalents, they're aimed at an adult audience, and on TV usually preceded by a somewhat superfluous warning- these shows are generally post watershed- and in the cinema by an appropriate certificate. As long as such language is used in context, I do not have a problem with it. My point was that Amon Goeth's character using the F-Word in Schindler's List is perfectly believable, and it works in the context. The fact that he is more concerned about being cold than the plight of the Jews in the ghetto, many of whom freeze to death on a daily basis, is emphasised by his use of the word. Likewise, (and I know it's not a film, but it was filmic in scope), the strong language used in The Sopranos is entirely believable, because one does not believe that New Jersey mobsters would talk like Bertie Wooster.

I am not offended by strong language when it is used in context; what does pee off Mr Pee is when it is clearly used purely for effect, and for shock value- Frankie Boyle is a prime example.
