    Granados and Albeniz: 15-19 October

    This looks good.

1/5 Donald Macleod introduces music that reflects Granados's and Albeniz's pianistic concerns
2/5 Albeniz and Granados's involvement in the quest for a Spanish national style of music
3/5 Donald Macleod focuses on Albeniz and Granados's waltzes, mazurkas and chamber music.
4/5 Donald Macleod introduces music which reflects the two composers' various interests
5/5 Donald Macleod explores Albeniz's masterpiece Iberia and Granados's tribute to Goya.

Alicia de Larrocha's playing of works by these composers is memorable, especially Granados's Goyescas.

Incidentally, TtN for last Monday 15/10/12 starts with a recording of Granados playing one of his works in a recording from 1913 (and the first two hours of the programme is a celebration of things pianistic*).

    * including an impressive live performance of Beethoven's Appassionata sonata op 57 by Maurizio Pollini from a concert in 1976

I heard the Granados piano quintet today and was absolutely bowled over. Reminded me of the Dumky trio a bit. Magnificent performance of a delightful work. I shall look out for it, that's for sure!

Thanks for the other info too, Aeo.

For all its bland pleasantness, and Pedrell's sterling work in re-establishing the grounds for a school, Spanish classical music doesn't really touch its own achievements in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries - when it really did sound Spanish and had its own clearly demarcated identity - until the French influence on harmony (principally Debussy and Ravel) kicks in in the case of Falla, engaging with Spanish/Moorish modality - which is really at the end of this weeks' programmes as far as Albeniz and Granados were concerned.

One or two pieces by Pedrell might have been included.

No sign of the Podcast of this yet... I wonder why?!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
