    A&G Gabrieli 16 – 20 April

For the whole of the second half of the 16th C, the name of Gabrieli dominated the musical life of Venice. Andrea and nephew Giovanni Gabrieli presided over public music-making at a time when the city was beginning to emerge as one of the most important centres of musical life in Europe. In the first programme, Donald Macleod focuses on the madrigals produced by Andrea, written primarily for the countless feast days held in the City every year.
Donald Macleod presents organ works and sacred vocal music written for St Mark's, Venice.

It is marked as (R) but no dates other than today are shown on the schedule page and I can’t remember hearing about Andrea Gabriel though this don’t mean very much and it doesn’t matter in the least. The historical background in today’s programme was interesting.

    More like this, please

I'm not normally an avid follower of CotW but happened to catch the first one in the car. This has been a fascinating set of programs (so far - I've a couple to catch up on), maybe I'm just 'ready' for Gabrielli (G.) at the moment, and uncle Andrea's output is pretty nifty too.

Interesting that the music all seems to come from a small handful of CD's, so follow-up purchases won't be too difficult.

... there is a cheapo 'brilliant' box of 5 cds with the Gabrieli Consort/ Paul McCreesh ("Venetian Vespers"?) - which gives you some of the best stuff from their earlier DG recordings. And all for abt £11...

Thanks, I'll certainly investigate that one, the Gabrieli Consort recordings sounded particularly good.
