    Philip Glass

All of a sudden Radio 3 has become interesting to listen to.

Sally Beamish CotW a little while ago, now Philip Glass CotW, not to mention Hear and Now (Beamish/ PMD), and late night Jazz programmes.

Could this be cause or effect of departure of Mark Thompson?

    Hope you like Schubert!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

This was a fascinating Composer of the Week programme. Glass is an interesting character; I found this a great follow-up to the recent television documentary:

Sky Arts is dedicated to the best arts programming across all genres, 24 hours a day.

Well since you have, how strange that PMD's Eight Songs for a Mad King should be discussed by that Service fellow without a single mention of Roy Hart, whose vocal gymnastics gave rise to the work. The first performance, at the QEH (which I was fortunate enough to attend), has never been matched in any I have heard. Fortunately it was saved to tape and had since been transferred to CD, though at somewhat of a premium price:

That DVD was my first IRR review assignment and an intriguing insight into Glass and his music. The 8th Symphony, which appeared in this first CotW programme, made a great impression on me. 'No one does existential dread as well as Philip Glass!' said Errol Morris in the doc. Quite.

I see that that DVD, replete with lots of extra footage and performances not included in the Sky broadcast may be had (new) for all of £4.18 (including p&p) via the amazon.co.uk marketplace, so no need to bother with Sky's spinning of it in data compressed video and audio.

I must look that up. Rather than search through each issue, could you give us the date of the review? (A shame that they seem to have abandoned the annual IRR Index after the first couple of years.)

It was the September issue of 2009.

What service! Something interesting to read in bed! And I'm sure I'll find lots of other things to distract me in the same issue: Simon Heighes on Baroque music, a review of Kuijken's B minor Mass, a survey of Bernstein's Mahler and the obituary for dear old Geoffrey Horn, so much missed for his Gramophone audio reviews and his wonderful shop in Summertown, Oxford, where I spent so much hard-earned cash in the 1980s and 90s.

                    Many thanks, Il GI!

                      My pleasure, VodkaDilc.

I know full well the dangers of leafing through past issues. I was searching for a particular review the other day and ended up side-tracked by several others which caught my attention.

My brain feels like shattered Glass with this insistent repetitive music. Could someone help me with a short, positive analysis of his work please. Love the discussion with DMcC. Thanks

I was rather pleased that DM started the week on Monday with what he said was PG's most beautiful work (Facades).

After that I didn't feel I needed to listen to the programme any more until next Monday.

I have to say that I have given it a miss. I tend to catch the 6:30 repeats, on the way home from work. I tuned in Tuesday and there was something lugubrious and repetitive which was precisely what I didn't need I confess to turning over to ClassicFM where Finzi's Clarinet Concerto, a Molter Trumpet Concerto & Beethoven's 8th etc provided precisely what I DID need. Mind you one had to turn a blind ear to the double-glazing and prostate clinic ads And a truly terrible piece of piano hogwash by someone called Phamie Gow http://phamiegow.com/v2/ *AVOID AVOID*
