It's very well recognised and commented on in a number of online resources. However, the rationale is something I can find no specific sign of in such resources, as yet.

Couldn’t resist googling anyway and found this . Appears to be linked to stage action (page 91 ) and an effect also used by Ethel Smyth in a near contemporary opera of hers…
