    Puccini...with Pappano on hand.

Great having Papano as studio guest, with piano and occasional singing!

Is there a problem with the programme's website? It seems not to be geared up for Puccini this week.

Today's programme on La bohème - which I did not hear in its entirety - was very good. Previously I didn't know that Mimi's name was really Lucia. Was yesterday's also as good - perhaps relevant in light of an upcoming Live Cinema showing of Manon Lescaut?

You can't have got past the first few words of her 'famous' aria then!

Mi chiamano Mimi, ma il mio nome è Lucia
(They call me Mimi, but my name is Lucia)

PS: Could a kind host correct the typo in the title? Pappano not Papano.

When I first heard this work my knowledge of Italian was considerably less than it became later. Nor did I have a recording which came with a libretto - as the version on LP I bought was, IIRC, one of the cheap CFP records which didn't have such a luxury. I haven't thought about it much since then - a period of over fourty years.

Nowadays, of course, I'd probably go to a Live screening, and there'd be surtitles (or subtitles) - though in quite a few cases the translations are not actually either correct, or acceptably good.

Kleenex ready for this Saturday's Opera North production for us: their titling (neither sub nor sur: it's to the side, so I guess we need a new word!) is usually pretty good, but like many others it has a tendency to conk out at important/complicated places!

A fine example of how to talk about music. Lovely if Papps could be persuaded to contribute to BAL occasionally

It's a repeat from 2017, but none the worse for that.

His tv programme (on voice and opera) was outstanding: a very gifted communicator.

Yes! Caught a bit this morning, it’s how music broadcasting should be. Understated passion for the subject and a deft explanation of the meaning of con slancio... I left after 5 minutes better informed and more motivated to relisten to the music than after hours of clichéd over-enthusing from the Usual Suspects
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

More Pappano here. Haven’t listened yet.

This series just has to be good. They always are with Pappano.
