I haven't heard the Huelgas Ensemble recording yet but the Sartori is beautiful and colourful and altogether admirable.

Originally posted by ferneyhoughgeliebte View Post- this was the recording second in dovers' list; there's been three recent recordings of the work, as if spurred by Donald Macleod's closing remarks at the end of today's final installment. I can only repeat, "Excellent news"!
Edit: First of all, the Tozzi recording, despite featuring the wonderfully named Riccardo Primitivo, seems to me not on the same level as the other two, using a much reduced instrumentation compared with the composer's suggestions, and less elegant in both vocal and instrumental departments. Comparing the other two recordings brings up some interesting questions of how such a work would have been performed in 1625. The Sartori recording is a fine example of what has come to be accepted as historically informed 17th century Italian operatic style, in terms of its dramatic and characterful delivery; but how accurate a picture does that give of performance practice at a time before there was any kind of "operatic tradition"? Listening to the Van Nevel recording I thought at first it was far too soft-grained in both vocal and instrumental timbre, leisurely in its pacing, not at all "dramatic". But then maybe that comes closer to what would have been performed and heard at the time, given that the Renaissance with its smooth and unemphatic polyphony had only been so to speak over for a few years, and Sartori's realisation on the other hand might just be theatrically exaggerated to suit the expectations of a 21st century audience for something more urgently theatrical. I can't decide. I find Van Nevel's realisation deeply considered and subtle but also somehow a bit dull.Last edited by Richard Barrett; 21-09-18, 14:01.

I think this was broadcast on Radio 3. What a pity it wasn’t filmed. It looks great fun.
Brighton early music festival’s saucy production of Francesca Caccini’s 1625 opera is full of fun, well cast and beautifully sung
And let’s hope Concerto Soave will record this.
Jonathan Swain presents a performance of Caccini's opera La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall'isola d'Alcina - the first opera to be written by a woman - from the Herne Early Music Festival.
