I've heard of him, he's quite famous. Italian if I'm not wrong. I'll definitely tune in

We all know the Stravinsky barbs about him writing the same Concerto 500 times, but I have to say that I am consistently amazed at the quality of his output. I just picked up a couple of Naxos discs from a charity shop called “The Dresden Concertos” Vol 1&2 and what vibrant, life affirming stuff! I ordered Volume 3&4

I didn't get it for years, then one day .........

In my top ten favourite composers, along with Bruckner, Messiaen, Mahler, Debussy, Sibelius, Beethoven, Wagner, Ravel & Tchaikovsky.

I'm still avidly collecting the superb Naive series, each CD is a joy to discover.

That set has gotten really good reviews. Rachel Podger’s discs on Channel Classics , particularly La Stravaganza, are really exciting.

The fact his own contemporaries, such as J.S. Bach, admired his music and went to some trouble to obtain it, further solidifies his eminence

Me too. Over thirty titles now!

The best Vivaldi survey out there?

I certainly think so, Beefy...although I still love Hogwood's recordings. Now gathered in a 20 CD box:

That box set is amazing value. I will resist, I’ve resolved not to add to my shelves!

According to Europadisc, this boxed set has now been deleted from the catalogue. However, Presto Classical and the various European Amazon sites (including amazon.co.uk) still list it.

Remarkable, if I heard DMcL correctly, that Vivaldi has been popular in the Classical World for only 50 years or so. Before that he was largely forgotten.

So only 20 of his operas have survived. That's more than enough for me!

You don’t need to go back that far. Even on this Forum of many experts and connoisseurs, it wasn’t all that long ago when Vivaldi, along with Telemann, was looked upon (down) with a sort of or worse until Beef Oven started a thread on Vivaldi then on What baroque and early music are you listening to. It was rather like #Me Too; members from all quarters began to post and boast his/her Vivaldi and Telemann collections and favourites. And we never looked back.

Even more remarkable! And it seems that the tide is still rising in the direction of Early Music.

But whether Early Music combined with Jazz will ever make the cut, I await with interest.
