Very interested to hear these programmes - Telemann is one of those composers whose Music I've kept intending to investigate never got around to doing so.

That's one of the best Telemann CDs there is, I think. Some of his most engaging instrumental works, in superb performances. But really there are so many beautiful recordings out there, and so much beautiful music (though, to be fair, quite a lot of run-of-the-mill music too), that it's hard to know where to begin. I'm still discovering new pieces whose existence I hadn't suspected. Interestingly, Telemann's rise to popularity has been largely down to the efforts of HIPP ensembles, unlike say in the case of Vivaldi; and one of the most distinctive features of much of his music is its clear derivation from folk music, which was very unusual in its time.

That, plus the "Ebb & Flo", and the box of complete Tafelmusik that I already own will do for now - everyone else's kind recommendations have all been noticed (as will any subsequent suggestions) will be put to one side for future reference.

Good job I'm not one of these "I daren't buy any more CDs in case I die" chaps, innit.

Well that would really be the ideal introduction to his work. I almost wish I didn't have all of those CDs and could discover them for the first time! - although the comments mention shoddy packaging and no liner notes, which is a shame, Reinhard Goebel could always be trusted to have an original and fascinating view of things.

Can't possibly be as flimsy as the Melodiya Kondrashin and Borodin Quartet Shostakovich boxes. Annoying that costs are cut with such contempt for the buyer, but rehousing the discs securely should not present too much of a problem. Spare room in other boxed sets and zipped multi-CD cases from pound shops spring to mind. It's the music on the discs which counts.

By the way, for those based in the U.K., best option appears to be to order from amazon.de (direct from Amazon, the lower base price marketplace options work out more expensive due to higher p&p charges). Such an order will pretty certainly result in the box being sent out from the well known German town of Dunfermline. The amazon.co.uk marketplace options are in danger of attracting custom and excise + Royal Mail handling charges.
