How strange - I was just hastening online to say that this fascinating week of programmes was coming up!

Featuring Rubbra's sons in conversation with Donald M...

... who in other news... oh hang on, let's be disciplined about this, I'll start a new thread.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Is this a repeat? (If it is, it'll be quite an old one, from about 10-15 years ago, so just as useful as a new set.)

I gave considerable time and attention to the Rubbra symphonies earlier this year - most of them at least interesting, with three works that really stood out for me (4, 5 & especially 6) and only one "real" dud (the Ninth - not really my sort of thing). I'll be interested to see how I react to them after not having heard any of them for six months or so. Good to hear the chamber Music, too.

            Thanks for the nudge, Cali

              No: newly recorded.
(Info from a friend who is a pal of Adrian Yardley, Rubbra's son.)

I've been listening to the Symphonies this week,I never go on holiday without them.
I can never decide whether 4 or 6 is the greatest, not that it really matters.
I've been playing the Adagio Tranquillo from No 2 over and over today,so beautiful.

I think I've mentioned before that I have a particular soft spot for number 8, having been at the Liverpool premiere and an Oxford repeat shortly after. That premiere performance is on an Italian Intaglio CD, coupled with a Boult performance of number 6, though the date of the perfomance given in the liner notes is wrong!

And unlike ferney, I like number 9 very much too, especially the incorporation of the chorales.

PS: How on earth does the CD get a ranking in the Herbs section on Amazon? Is it because of the sleeve design?

The Squire has just given us a little taster on Breakfast: A Tribute (to RVW), the Hickox recording.

I remember my father (keen amateur pianist) telling me about hearing him play for the troops during the War. These concerts are mentioned in his Wiki entry.
