    COTW Clara Schumann

I'm afraid what this week has done is prove to me why she is such an indifferent composer.

Though that must be true of a lot of composers on CotW. She composed some charming pieces, and that must be worth something, surely?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

One can sympathise. Never managed to put anything down on paper, poor FS.

            Clara Mendelssohn's sister-in-law, perhaps?

              Bob Brahms's niece.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I think Clara Schumann's music is lovely and enjoyed the series.
OK probably none of it is groundbreaking but maybe that can be said of the work of many composers.
Simply pleasant listening and there's nowt wrong with that.

Me too, what I heard I liked and I hope that more performances of her music in the R3 schedules will follow.
Clara and Fanny M would make an interesting recital programme.

I agree. The comments would apply to a disc of piano and chamber music we bought appropriately enough at the CD shop in the Gewandhaus, Leipzig, where Clara, (like my wife - not a composer), was born. It is thoroughly recommendable and well worth hearing. Details + review here

Not criticising the series of progs - actually, Donald M's contextualising of the lady was expert and well-thought out. As good solid, R3 RADIO, fine.

It's just that I felt it was the lady and not her music that dominated. Is her music vital enough to require a whole 5 hrs exposure? Well, clearly the BBC team thought not, hence the Liszt etc etc that we heard. I wondered how her music survived against some of the comparisons that were made.

I suppose it's up to the listeners to judge that, if they think questions like "How does she measure up to Schumann, the Mendelssohns, Liszt, Brahms in terms of 'worthiness'"? actually matter. She composed. If she were 'only' interesting because of the other musicians in her own circle, that would seem to make her a legitimate CotW choice, since the programme is a music documentary: it is biography, music history, context.
