Ticciati and the BBC Phil perform sibelius 1 on R3 at 23.50 tonight . Not sure if this is a first broadcast or not

      Should be interesting.

The BBC Philharmonic under Robin Ticciati play Sibelius's Symphony No 1 in E minor, Op 39.

Information seems to be on a " Need to Know" basis.

This week's take covers Sibelius's work prior to, during and after WWI.

The music from this period is perhaps his most varied in idiomatic scope, where it is arguably easiest to relate to aspects of his contemporaries. Later this becomes more difficult as the composer was to become trapped in his own self-isolation, maybe. Hopefully some who have expressed mystified antagonism towards his music here may find a second chance within themselves for a re-assessment.

        Programme 1 (today):

Maybe having that high collar cutting into his windpipe unless he held his head permanently upright had something to do with it???
