Composer of the week is exploring aspects of Beethoven, with some thoughtful words from Donald Macleod.

The Radio Schedule is not altogether objective for Thursday's programme It might be better of they were to deal with facts rather than cheap jibes when describing works such as this - "trashy" & "fatuous". Still, I suppose it's a change from constant gushing. I could just do without their opinions for once.

I really would like to hear the work played as originally conceived.

There's nothing wrong with exploring the work of the most famous composers, but perhaps an opportunity to delve deeper than the obvious was missed.

They disinter Beethoven for this programme more often than they dig up the road outside my window, and that happens once a year. A quaver cannot have gone unexamined from every conceivable angle!

I’d have been glad to hear CoW on Beethoven or any major composers not so very long ago, and I hope there are many listeners to whom even Beethoven’s works are new discoveries.. Composer of the Week is one of the best, if not the best, ‘entry point’ for listeners with little knowledge of but with a serious intention to learn about classical music.

Ideally (to me), CoW should programme major, not usually in the top ten, and little known composers in equal proportions. I don’t think the programme is doing too badly lately from this point.

It's a repeat from 2013 but I've enjoyed listening as I missed some of it last time. I love Donald's production and presentation.
