Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre: 2-6 March

My two and a half reasons to be listening to this CoW, ignoring the usual copy&paste information on the website, are:

    1. She is a French Baroque composer
    2. I have never heard of her or her music.
    2 1/2. a woman composer (but so what…?)

Here are some samples of her music.

I first heard her music on an old Argo LP, recorded on a fine sounding instrument by Kenneth Gilbert.

I always think of her as Liz Flak-Jacket

Must confess to complete ignorance of her music though
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

... I first encountered her music through a stunning disc by Carole Cerasi, highly recommended.

You could say that Jacquet de La Guerre’s music is just like any other French Baroque composers’ music. That’s a good enough reason for me to be quite excited about the prospect of hearing four more hours of this composer’s works. I thought the cantata was very good.

Yes - some very impressive Music on today's programme: I'd never heard any of her work before, so I'm particularly grateful.

Interesting to learn that she is another former resident of the Île Saint-Louis, like thee and me, vinrouge. Do you or does anyone know where on the island she resided? I've had a quick rummage round google but can't find it. Her dad was organist at the church on the island, the Église Saint-Louis-en-l'Île so perhaps all we can do is infer that the family lived hard by the church...

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

                  Ah... haven't heard today's yet.

So - rue Budé. Now we just need to know which front door.....

                  Thanks, vinchaud

Nice. And the next street from mine (no 5/6 - gaff of Baudelaire's mistress - pity that website can't spell his name... - and of a Revolutionary lawyer guillotined with Citizen Robespierre):

But she didn't die there. In 1727 she left I’Ile-Saint-Louis for the Parish of Saint-Eustache where she rented an apartment in the Rue des Prouvaires. On 27th June 1729 she died and was buried the next day in the Church of Saint-Eustache.

(were your apartments as grand as your front doors?)

Mine was a tiny studio - I could literally touch both side walls by standing in the middle with both arms outstretched!

Ah to be young again, and in Paris!
