Well,if the almost too painful to listen to slow movement of the 12th symphony (in memoriam Dmitri Shostakovich)doesn't bring a tear to the eye I admit defeat,MW probably isn't for you.
Please try to listen to the Trio for flute, viola and harp, you wouldn't believe the sounds this combination can produce

'What's remarkable is the exraordinary quality of the music he produced at such volume' Donald Macleod's words.

I didn't realise that Weinberg didn't have a publisher until 15 years ago.

One of the most interesting and enjoyable COTWs in a long while.

Thank you Donald Macleod,Martin Anderson and Radio 3.

I caught Sonata No.6 and the concerto, and very much enjoyed them both.

I've ordered the violin concerto and the 10th symphony. Very interesting music. I must try to download these COTWs before they disappear.

The 12th was my first Weiberg disc, performed by Maxim Shostakovich and released on Russian Disc in 1994. I have about another half dozen Weinberg Symphonies but this remains my favorite .

It's an astonishing piece rfg, deserves to be heard by a wider audience,if only concert planners were a bit more adventurous.

Given the mayhem hereabouts ER I only managed to dip in but was very impressed - I am going through a bit of a Walton phase at the moment the contrast in lifestyles and total outputs is somewhat scary. Is the fact COTW eventually arrived here not a mild plaudit for R3 audience participation?

I listened to some of the free snippets of the Trio on Amazon. It does whet the appetite for the entire piece.

More a wake up call that there's more to classical music than endless repeats of commonplaces - to Radio 3, and to its, er, participative audience, I'd have said.

Yes - but this is a very different calibre of "audience participation" from the "My budgie always sings along to the Finale of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" species, or the "Today's Braindeader" that represent R3's more usual interpretation of the term.

It's also in the Naxos library.

                              Good news indeed.

Presumably just a taster for something more substantial at the Proms.

Oh, and yes,an excellent week of programmes , COTW at its best I thought.
