    COTW w/c 02/06/14 - Weinberg

It looks like some of us have finally been listened to, and the neglected master Mieczyslaw Weinberg will finally be COTW on the 2nd June. I hope as many members who are unfamiliar with this composer will tune in and take the opportunity to hear the music of this fine and undeservedly overlooked composer.

At the moment only the name Weinberg is listed so I hope I'm not mistaken and we get the rather lesser Jakob Weinberg instead!

    Rejoice !

I also urge forumites to try to listen to some of these programmes.
If you like DSCH I'm sure you will find plenty to enjoy.
I no expert but I believe some of Weinberg's work to equally as good as that of the great man.

Good radio news indeed. The campaign bears fruit.

If a campaign can bear fruit, which i dont think it can.

Absolutely! It will be very interesting to hear how his life and music are treated on CotW.

Mieczyslav Weinberg is the same person as Moisei (Moishei) Vainberg: presumably the different spellings reflect the difficulties of turning Polish into English. As Vainberg, I have one work by him, his trumpet concerto in B flat major op. 94. It will be interesting to hear some of his other works.

I read somewhere (CD booklet?) that one was the anglicised form of his Cyrillic name (he spent time in Russia) - but no doubt 1st program of COTW will explain why known in catalogues under 2 names

Some info on the name here http://www.music-weinberg.net

Some confusion has attended Mieczysław Weinberg’s surname. In Poland he was Wajnberg, in the Soviet Union, Moisey Samuilovich Vaynberg — “Matek” to those who knew him well. A few traditionalists still cling to the other Cyrillic-derived version: “Vainberg”. But there have been a number of other variations, including Wajnberg, Vaynberg or Vijnberg. The music-historian Per Skans has written of the composer’s preference for the standard Westernised version, “Weinberg”, and this spelling is now becoming the norm.

I've only heard the (excellent) Cello Concerto so far but if ever there was a serious chance to catch more of Weinberg's music this is it.

Opera North produced Weinberg's The Portrait in 2011 and the programme booklet states that it was "recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3". My partner, who works for Leeds University, was able to get good stalls seats cheaply for a performance of this, which we both greatly enjoyed. The quartet cycle has been recorded by the Quatuor Danel, which has also performed them live at Manchester University since they became the quartet-in-residence there. I have heard a number of these live and it is a cycle with a wide variety of moods.
