The Haitink box that bbm is playing through is a source of great annoyance in that I have most of what's in it except for the Schubert 9, 8, Dvorak 7 and Haydn 96. All gems!

Having splashed out on the Haitink the Philips Years box, worth it for the few items I didn't have, I was annoyed to see that the later box, the Haitink Symphony Edition, included one or two items I still don't have but plenty of duplication with the earlier box thus rendering it economic madness to buy it!

Just waiting for the price to drop to 'give away' proportions.

Sorry to put a damper on this thread, but Bernard Haitink took a fall during the bows of his Mahler 9 last Friday night:

Dirigent Bernard Haitink is vrijdagavond in Amsterdam gevallen na afloop van een concert dat hij gaf in het Concertgebouw. De 89-jarige dirigent viel op het podium tijdens het applaus.

        Partial translation c/o "the Google":

'Conductor Bernard Haitink fell in Amsterdam on Friday evening after a concert he gave at the Concertgebouw. The 89-year-old conductor fell on stage during the applause.

According to the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the maestro is working well under certain circumstances. "He is currently recovering at his hotel. This, of course, made us all a bit scared," says the orchestra of which Haitink is honorary conductor on Twitter.'
The original post on Twitter from the RCO is here:

"We are relieved that honorary conductor Bernard Haitink is doing well under the circumstances. After tonight's concert @Concertgebouw, during applause, he fell while on stage. He is now recovering in his hotel. This of course gave us all quite a scare. Thank you all for your concern!"
Obviously the orchestra means that his tumble scared them, not that his hotel recovery is scaring them. (An accidental case of the orchestra's English being Dutch for a moment.) Clearly the main concern is the hope that Uncle Bernie gets well, and quickly.

Dutch conductor Bernard Haitink suffered a heavy fall on stage last night - following a performance of Mahler’s 9th Symphony at the Concertgebouw.

It is also mentioned at Slipped Disc but I would rather not entice contributors here to that site by linking to it.

I do hope he will recover sooner rather than later. Events like this are not good at his age.

As some of you Forumistas would seen, lately I’ve been playing the 20 CD set of Bernsrd Haitink The Philips Years , a very fine set indeed. Every CD well worth hearing.

There's one more sudden opportunity for Mahler 9 with Bernard Haitink and the KCO in Amsterdam, on August 29:

However, tickets do look to be sold out:

These two concerts (one in Amsterdam and the other in Lucerne) replace performances of Mahler 7 that should have been conducted by Gatti. Lucky those who have tickets.

I can confirm that Gatti conducted a wonderful Mahler 1 with Concertgebouw in May. So now with Haitink stepping in they promise be great concerts.

Wish I could go. I’ve only been to one Haitink concert evert. That was many years ago when he was with the O doing Shostakovich 4!

Seems as if Sir Bernard has recovered from his fall.

I'm due to hear Concertgebouw in September at Musikfest Berlin and Gatti is down to conduct. I wonder who will replace him for that concert. Surely not.....

According to Bachtrack, the September 4 concert is being conducted by Manfred Honeck.

Thanks for that. Honeck's a favourite of mine.
