One more chance to hear Haitink in his last concert ever from last September, via Afternoon Concert:
Listen without limits, with BBC Sounds. Catch the latest music tracks, discover binge-worthy podcasts, or listen to radio shows – all whenever you want
You do have to endure a terrible verbal gaffe from Kate Molleson at the start (which she does correct). But keep your ears on the prize.

There's a three minute trailer on youTube for a 90th birthday Euroarts interview with Haitink https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1CIJ9Uj6sE which whets the appetite for the full version. However, I can't find the full version anywhere, including on Euroarts own website.
Anybody know where to find it?Last edited by Petrushka; 04-03-20, 13:54."The sound is the handwriting of the conductor" - Bernard Haitink

The Adagio seems very special indeed, through all the ebbs and flows there is always a sense of forward momentum as though Haitink and the orchestra are always looking to the great climax of the movement (the cymbal crash moment) and beyond to the final bars. The great climax of the movement, when it comes, is overwhelming.
It's a pity that Bernard Haitink's final concert was shunted into the afternoon schedule.
A recording to treasure.
Incidentally, the dynamics at the point of the climax in the Adagio clearly show evidence of some form of limiting (you can hear that the orchestral sound should rise to the climax because of the timbre of the orchestral sound - but there is no rise in actual volume). So I have edited the file (using Sound Forge "envelope" tool) to re-establish the increased volume at that point - only 4dB but it sounds "right".
