No idea if this will be archived for a short spell, or if this is a "one and done" deal. I only just figured this out 15 minutes ago.
    It was quite a night.

..& not merely at the Proms, BBMmk2. Some of us "oldies" have vivid memories of BH's distinguished tenure at Glyndebourne -- the magical Britten/Peter Hall "Midsummer Night's Dream" in 1981 -- "Don Giovanni" with Thomas Allen in his pomp a couple of years later -- the 90s "Ring" at Covent Garden...The set of DSCH & RVW with the LPO. Nothing the man did was, as some of his detractors have insisted, in any way routine, but presented to the audience in the service of the composer & in an attitude of humility, in the best possible sense -- an undervalued attribute in today's society.

One more chance to hear Haitink in his last concert ever from last September, via Afternoon Concert:

Listen without limits, with BBC Sounds. Catch the latest music tracks, discover binge-worthy podcasts, or listen to radio shows – all whenever you want

You do have to endure a terrible verbal gaffe from Kate Molleson at the start (which she does correct). But keep your ears on the prize.

A coincidence - I am listening to the Bruckner as I reply. The performance somehow has a valedictory feel about it.

(I saved the concert and cut out Kate Molleson.)

Or was it "I saved the concert by cutting out Kate Molleson"?

There's a three minute trailer on youTube for a 90th birthday Euroarts interview with Haitink https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1CIJ9Uj6sE which whets the appetite for the full version. However, I can't find the full version anywhere, including on Euroarts own website.

Anybody know where to find it?

Although not a Bruckner fan I'm very taken by this BH Lucerne performance of Bruckner 7.

The Adagio seems very special indeed, through all the ebbs and flows there is always a sense of forward momentum as though Haitink and the orchestra are always looking to the great climax of the movement (the cymbal crash moment) and beyond to the final bars. The great climax of the movement, when it comes, is overwhelming.

It's a pity that Bernard Haitink's final concert was shunted into the afternoon schedule.

                          A recording to treasure.

Incidentally, the dynamics at the point of the climax in the Adagio clearly show evidence of some form of limiting (you can hear that the orchestral sound should rise to the climax because of the timbre of the orchestral sound - but there is no rise in actual volume). So I have edited the file (using Sound Forge "envelope" tool) to re-establish the increased volume at that point - only 4dB but it sounds "right".

Birthday wishes to Bernard Haitink, 91 today.

Can't get used to not seeing his name there in the new season's concert schedules.

I hope it doesn't dampen enthusiasm too much.
