I had a couple of those pioneering Thomson Bax records - not a patch on Tod Handley's cycle in my opinion which did finally turn me on to Bax's works along with the Halle/Barbirolli wartime recording of the Third on Dutton.

I disagree here, Handleys' cycle is IMO not superior to Thomson's, though slightly differently recorded.
I prefer exactly for that reason Thomson's as I do hear details in Handley's which I do think should not be heard, given the overall approach of Bax's way of orchestration.
