Hello, Suffolk Coastal. Thanks for all the data you collect. I may have missed this but is your database able to distinguish between music on live broadcasts (and recordings of live broadcasts) and music that is played from cds etc, and if so, is the pattern of both groups similar or are there significant differences?

Unfortunately it doesn't, its just too much work to add that in as well I'm afraid.

A Stakhanovite effort (again), well done!
A unique analysis that deserves serious attention and I would hope a considered response, from the R3 Controller and his music producers. Do send him a copy.

Thanks for all the positive comments from the survey. As I have 5 years of data now I'll produce some average figures for the composers across the 5 years. FF if you need the actual spreadsheets for anything let me know. This year already doesn't look promising the warhorse table is already rapidly filling up, some with more than one playing, and we only halfway through the first month!

it would be interesting (not that I'm volunteering) if someone listened to or monitored CFM for a month so that an accurate comparison could be made with R3 - would the same composers and works come out "top" so-to-speak.

Well. SM-P twittered on about the Classical Charts in The Choir last Sunday. so someone is compiling them somewhere. As if they matter to anyone.

I wasn't really meaning CD sales (isn't that what the Classical Charts are about ? ) - I just meant the daily playlists of R3 compared to CFM. If one were to "do a suffolkcoastal" of CFM would the result be similar to R3. Not a profound thought I know, I'm just curious.

Thanks for alerting us to the evening concert this week featuring the Holt, Mozart, Bernstein and Hoddinott x 2. I enjoyed it a lot, particuarly the Holt and the longer Hoddinott work Dragon Fire. Anyone else catch it?

Worth taking a look at this:

The BBC's classical music station is a ghost of what it once was because of an obsession with rival Classic FM

Thanks Hs, for once I agree with the Torygraph, seems a well written and argued article, and seems to some up my feelings, good to get yet more backing to our cause. Having had to listen through the whole of Tuesday's Breakfast the other day, except for the adverts it is an almost exact copy of CFM right down to almost every detail of presenter style. As the first month of 2014 draws to a close, from the figures we are business as usual it seems (8 chunks from Peer Gynt already for example, with special attention to Solveig's Song).

some amusing comments under the article e.g.

I do listen to Radio 3 but switch it off every time they have a recording by the BBC Scottish or BBC Welsh Symphony orchestras: which now is most of the time. The BBC are doing what they have set themselves the task to do and that is undermine the English in any way they can in pursuit of their socialist ideology and support for the left.

Forcing anyone to do this would surely contravene several human rights conventions - although in that respect R3 is flying close to the wind as well.
