    Sinaisky resigns from Bolshoi - who's next?

    Valery Sinaisky has resigned from the post of Music Director of Russia's Bolshoi Theatre after three years in the job. His letter of resignation was accepted by the Bolshoi's director, Vladimir Urin. Speaking exclusively to the Voice of Russia, Sinaisky said that he "felt a gap" between him and Mr. Urin "more and more" and "didn’t want there to be a real conflict".

    So who is to follow him in these turbulent times?

    According to Norman Lebrecht (!) there are three front-runners ...

    - Tugan Sokhiev, a Gergiev protégé, presently head of the DSO Berlin and the Capitole orchestra in Toulouse;

    - Vasily Petrenko, chief of the Royal Liverpool and the Oslo Philharmonic and principal guest at the Mikhailovsky in St Petersburg;

    - Dmitry Jurowski, younger brother of Vladimir who has repeatedly shunned approaches from the Bolshoi.

    Any thoughts?

    Anyone?

      Seems to me to be something of a poisoned chalice. Rather like the situation with a manager of a football club, I'm amazed some of them actually want the job especially when conflicts with the chairman led to previous incumbents resigning/being sacked.

        Quite! I think Petrenko would be well advised to stay clear of such an appointment.

          That'll be my advice when he asks me

            I know they all take on an alarmingly large number of jobs these days, but that one in addition to what he's already committed to would surely be too much even for someone with Petrenko's energy.
