Brass ARE wind. But of course brasswind instruments rely upon the harmonic series totally. Even with valves and slides, the harmonic series is merely lowered to a new key. (Or has someone already said this? )

It usually occurs at a change of tempo or metre, Rob - telling the performer that in the new section the speed of the dotted crotchet is the same as the speed of the quaver in the previous section.

I think it's a tempo change indication - that a quaver after the change should be the same as a dotted crotchet (i.e. 3 quavers) before the change, i.e. you get slower by a factor of 3.

          I think.

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Surely an inequality, not an equation?

              - I think you're right (and I'd got it the wrong way round): there tends to be a Tempo modification and/or a new metronome mark so that it's obvious whether the Music gets three times faster or slower (in the example Rob gave).

Oh! No.... I think I got it the wrong way round! OR did I. Can't decide now.

Well, the pulse stays the same, but there's three times as much (or three times less) happening between each pulse.

My (un) amusing reply was a play for time , ferney.

As simply as I can put it, what was previously written as a dotted crotchet is now written as a quaver.

Or, assuming The tempo is the same, the time given to each specific note type needs to be trebled.

                    I think.

In practice it would likely be obvious if you needed to treble or third the value.

                      So, trebles all round?

                        - the context makes everything clear. Usually.

Blimey this teach yourself music theory is a minefield.
                          Would something similar to

Ah yes, but not, of course, for the trebles, who would be under age.
                            Ironically.

In the case you asked about, i would assume that the composer wanted to move from compound (beats divisible by 3)time to simple (beats divisible by 2 or 4 ) time.

There is usually another way round, in this case by using triplets perhaps, along with possibly a tempo change.
                              I think.
