PROGRESSION OF FIFTHS!

This really IS important!

Never understood why ii goes to V, V goes to I (alright, that’s easy – Perfect Cadence, right?).

Now it makes sense! Perfect 4ths rising, Perfect 5ths descending! I-IV-vii°-iii-vi-ii-V-I.

Also, ii-V-I is a “well-known” progression, especially in jazz apparently (ok, if you say so…)

Am happier now…

I’ve been recommended the following books to help with my Music Theory, which are

1) Harmony in Practice, and

2) Stylistic Harmony,

both by Anna Butterworth. Are these useful books please? If the answer books are included, that's a total of some £120.

Dunno but £120 strikes me as ridiculous. Presumably the Butterworth Harmony On Practice is out of print ? It’s on Abe Books for £14.00 odd.
Schoenberg Theory Of Harmony is good but you might need a teacher to help you through it. To be honest if you are self taught there comes a point where getting a teacher is quite important if following the “rules” or structures is important to you . You can of course write music without obsessing over the rules. A teacher won’t just correct mistakes but will talk your through the various alternatives and the advantages of them or otherwise and explain the reasons why.

What you say sounds eminently sensible to me EH, but those blessed consecutive 5ths & 8vas are so cleverly hidden, the cunning little things, that I find it a real headache having to search for them. And I have just read no more than an hour ago (since HM is on her way to Windsor now) that Debussy built a whole career on them in introducing “consecutive movement” in 7ths and 9ths as well.

Confusion reigns!

I've dug out my copy of 'Harmony in Practice', and yes, it is useful - I think it may be the official book used for ABRSM theory.

There are a few other books I have which are more comprehensive and ambitious, usually they're American and integrate some Schenkerian aspects to the study of harmony, and this one integrates musicianship, study of melody and counterpoint, in-depth look at form and chromaticism and beyond (at the risk of draining Mario's bank account further!) -

Can anyone name the Schubert song he quotes in the last movement (allegretto) of his G Major piano sonata, D.894?

It sounds a little like 'Fruhlingsglaube' D.686b, but not quite.

I've searched many places without success.
