The advance notice of these concerts has just arrived. Apart from the Mahler there is a complete cycle of Sibelius symphonies. Of these, the only one I would seriously consider is the second in the series, which has Kavakos playing the Violin Concerto sandwiched between the 3rd and 4th symphonies. Much as I love Sibelius, the prospect of hearing 1& 2 together in one evening with a later concert of 5, 6 & 7 in a row is rather daunting, even with these performers.

One composer evenings can be rather indigestible in my view. Others will feel that a journey through Sibelius in this way will be rewarding.

I gather that tickets are going to be expensive; £95 top price perhaps.

I was lucky enough to hear Lief Siegerstam conduct the BBCSSO in the last three symphonies without a break about 5 years ago. It was a stunning experience and one I've tried to replicate on cd.

        Just super!

                  Hi M3

glad you got some good ones.
Only top price for the Sibelius left at 11 am, and the concerto night was sold out.
In the end got 2 for the Saturday Mahler at the price I wanted, so I'm happy !!

                  can't wait..good thing its only 15 months away !!!

If it's anything like the Mahler 3 Simon Rattle conducted with the Berlin Philharmonic a couple of years ago at the Royal Festival Hall it will be worth waiting for!!!, Mahler's 2nd seems to hold a very special place for Simon Rattle, it was the work that inspired him to conduct in the first place when he heard it in Liverpool

It wasn't helpful being stuck in the office all day but finally logged on to the Barbican site at 19.00 to be told that both Mahler 2 performances had sold out. Logged on to the Southbank Centre and told several tickets still available. I quickly purchased one for the Saturday performance in one of the boxes on the Green side M104 priced at £50.

Am happy with that. All I've got to do now is remember to turn up!

EDIT: According to the Southbank Centre website there are numerous tickets for the Sunday performance of the Mahler 2 so not sure why the Barbican are saying sold out.

I was lucky enough to be working at home, (pure chance) and I wanted to book for the Sibelius, so went onto the Barbican site, as it had been announced that you could book for any concert through either venue.
I couldn't get tickets at the price I was prepared to pay for any of the Sibelius, so went to try to book Mahler tickets via the Barbican site.
It only gave me the option of stalls seats(I think, certainly not balcony or sides), which might have led some to think , as you suggest, that the other sections were sold out.
Not impressive, luckily for me I had time to faff about and found what I wanted for the Mahler.
Anyway, glad you got what you wanted Pet, perhaps we will meet up at the gig, 15 months hence !

(although whether "box" people mix with mere balcony folk is another matter ).

There seems to be something of a discrepancy between the two sites as to what is available. Poor co-ordination.

Look forward to the post-concert pint, ts!

                            look forward to it Pet

At the risk of moaning, the Barbican centre is (right now)showing the RFH concerts as sold out, but there are in fact a decent smattering of tickets at a range of prices available still for Sunday, and the odd one still for Saturday.

Don't know why they bothered, should just have sold them through their own sites !!

Sadly all the sibelius concert tickets had gone but I was thrilled to be able to capture the very last £25 ticket for the Sunday 15 February concert of Lachenmann and Mahler - middle of the back row of the balcony, from where I've seen Solti, Haitink and Tennstedt as well as young Simon and his CBSO 'doing' Mahler symphony no. 2 in times gone by

Teams is right I'm sure, the ticket touts will have snarfed up a good quantity of these tickets, but from my experience of working in a London concert hall, nearer the time folks who have availed themselves of tickets for all the concerts will suddenly find that other events have their attractions and there may well be some returns.

I've just been looking at the prices for these concerts at various 'outlets'. £200 over and above the face value seems to be the order of the day! I honestly think I'd rather go to Berlin and hear Sir Simon and the Berlin Phil. at the Philharmonie. I would imagine that these programmes will feature in the Orchestra's 2014/15 season.
