It's queer, that having said that, I play his music less often than I used to and he rarely gets a mention on the forum.

When I was a kid, his music seemed to be everywhere, even more than Beethoven's, now it's a rarity.

Is it not time to restore him, especially given our preference for music from the 1800s?

Lest he suffers the fate of Mendelssohn

Been meaning to respond too this thread for ages. Tchaikovsky may not be mentioned on these boards too much but he certainly does not need rehabilitation his music is played regularly in concert, on the radio and recordings proliferate. Mendelssohn seems to be more of a rehabilitation case.

Indeed, his music does not need rehabilitating, but his reputation and professional standing needs restoring to its proper place!

There is another Petrenko single disc The Tchaikovsky Album which includes Francesca and Capriccio Italien, thought by many as a trivial work but I love it!

I suggest his operas need rehabilitating (apart from the Big Two).

They played them in the Complete Tchaik season on R3 a year or two back. They go on a bit methinks, but each to his/her own!

They did indeed, including Vakula the Smith and the remaining scraps of Undine (mostly recycled into Swan Lake)

As for "going on a bit", one hearing on the radio is only the start. My desert island Tchaikovsky opera is The Maid of Orleans (but I'm sure I've said this ad nausiam).

On Naxos they did a few. I thought they had done a complete cycle.

Are you thinking of Petrenko's Shostakovich cycle, which is on Naxos?
