Tchaikovsky - time to rehabilitate?

I recall saving almost all of it in mp2 format from a Pure Bug. Highlights included the version of Stravinsky's Les Noces with Rex Lawson in charge of the player-piano part, and the original version of Tchaikovsky's Winter Daydreams Symphony (No. 1).

Just checked my catalogue of recordings and incredibly it was in Feb 2007. Where did all those years go? I recorded Sym 1 by BBCPO Noseda and PragueSO Smetacek. It seemed that Noseda had quite an input into the project as his recordings of all the Sympnohies inc Manfred and also the Tchaik influenced Strav Fairy's Kiss.

Yes - the Karajan recording with the Don Cossack choir (conducted by its founder, Serge Jaroff) that's the coupling for the 1967 Serenade on DG Galleria. (I had the performance on LP, with the Beethoven "Battle" Symphony on the other side.)

The choir was a favourite of Karajan's - and this is the only time that he "shared" the conducting honours; the choir recorded their section under Jaroff, the orchestra playing the remainder, recorded at different sessions.

There are many variations of choral 1812s.

My first recording was on a 45 rpm EP, with the choir singing the opening 4-note Russian hymn and the imperial Russian National anthem at the end.
Other versions add the choir to the reprise of the the opening Russian hymn, either instead of, or as well as at the opening of the work.
And there are Soviet insertions too.

There are HIPP versions too, with no cannons.

I would love a choral version that has the whole gamut!!! :) The Antal Dorati version would have been even better if he had the choral version as well.

There is an Ashkenazy recording of Serenade for Strings with the StPetersburg - anyone heard or got it? It's coupled with the PO Sym 5 on a Decca reissue. That recording of No 5 is also coupled with a Serenade for Strings on the HMV store led cfm Full Works label but does anyone know if it is the StPPO/Ashkenazy or some other from the Umg that it is coupled with?

There are no choral options in my score.

As far as I know, the choral contribution is modern. It first appeared in a version of the score prepared by Igor Buketoff c. 1960.

Tchaikovsky is one of my favourite composers, always has been ever since I can remember. In fact he's a desert island composer for me.

It's queer, that having said that, I play his music less often than I used to and he rarely gets a mention on the forum.

When I was a kid, his music seemed to be everywhere, even more than Beethoven's, now it's a rarity.

Is it not time to restore him, especially given our preference for music from the 1800s?
