    Oddly uninformative (uninformed?) Guardian review

Schiff imbued The Well-Tempered Clavier's 24 preludes and fugues with a formidable sense of direction, writes Martin Kettle

We are told that Schiff[I] "...explored the 24 preludes and fugues of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier."

Does the reviewer think that's all there are?

Or has he been let down by the sub-editors?

Hope so, for his sake - as at present I don't feel inclined to read a word more. I do sort of expect reviewers to know a little bit more about the music than I do.

Call me picky / old-fashioned / (what was it?... oh yes) fogeyish conservative and ... unashamedly 'elitist"
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
    Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

No , but seriously for a minute, The Guardian publishes racing tips, but you wouldn't actually place money on one of them, would you?

(The same might be said about other papers on other subjects).

And to pretend to be like Beef Oven?!?! for a moment, why do you expect a reviewer to know more than you do? They might . Or not.
Sometimes they don't go to the concert/match/political rally/cider festival that they are covering.
Actually , they do usually go to the cider festivals, TBF.

I like the little photos the journos have of themselves above their articles.

Agreed, probably not. But the article doesn't suggest that there are 48...

perhaps he was reviewing a potted version?

          or spouting rubbish?

I think he makes his point clear in the comments ... and the finger points at a sub trying to fit the review into the column centimetres allowed.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Maybe the Mergers and Monopolies Commission has got involved somehow?

                  fair comment.
When I was actually following Racing closely , the guardian appeared to be deliberately trying to lose money for its readers, not sure why they wanted to do this !!
So deep apologies all round !

The comments appeared since I read the article and indeed "It's the subs wot ******d it up!!"

Mr K is forgiven, the Grewniad is not.

but is it going to be on the wireless [prickly and unashamed grump anarcho-syndic &c]?
According to the best estimates of astronomers there are at least one hundred billion galaxies in the observable universe.

Well, erm, actually and pedantically, there are only 24 that are officially given this title. Book 2 is collection of other Preludes and Fugues in each of the 24 keys, not labelled as such by the composer.

Is that true!? I stand corrected!

I do wonder whether there's a touch on one-upmanship on the part of the reviewer, as he refers to the "24" more than once, as though trying to set the offside trap, rather like the ABRSM set of the 35 Beethoven Sonatas.
