    There are two Brahms's, the early and the late. The pianoforte sonatas are rubbish; but the fourth symphony - well!

          Can't agree about the sonatas. The third might not be an unqualified masterpiece but in the right hands it can be thrilling. And what of the wonderful first piano concerto? Is that not 'early' too?
