Seconded he was the only modern choral composer who really could be said to stand amongst the greats or all time (along with perhaps Arvo Part) : Bach, Palestrina etc. John Rutter may get all the attention but Sir John was a genius: I think he will be very sadly missed

... De mortuis nihil nisi bonum.

Which does not mean that one needs to have had much time for his music.

He was on Start The Week talking with Janette Winterson, Andrew Marr and a.n. other on Start The Week, only yesterday morning, about the poetry of George Herbert. Talk about Fate taking a hand!

True; and he meant a lot to many.

I shall never forget being in King's Chapel on Christmas Eve for the Ceremony in which The Lamb was premièred.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

My friend Rodney Newton met him a few times and spoke of his genuiness in what he believed in and not being outspoken about his beliefs either.

...and I expect there will hasty revisings of carol services throughout the land to include it.

I'm afraid I've done a new thread on The Choir. As he was such a big influence on the choral scene, I thought he ought to have a presence there.

I realised why you had done it just in time to stay my hand from merging a second time!

I have fond memories of attending the premier of The Whale. Much, much later I was somewhat surprised to find his work was held in high regard by some of Cornelius Cardew's closest musical associates in his (Cardew's) last years. Sorry to read of his death.

I replied to the other thread, but I would urge anyone who doesn't know this short piece to give it a listen...it gives me goose pimples when I hear it.

Does anyone remember a TV programme (was it Arena?) a long, long time ago featuring the young JT and The Whale? I have a dim recollection of his being filmed at the organ of a non-conformist chapel (can that really be so?) and of his being portrayed as something of an enfant terrible...but then memory plays tricks.
