    Britten on BBC4

Mary Chambers has posted the following under General Arts:

Every night at the moment BBC Four is showing a trailer about the centenary coverage (Radio 3 and BBC Four), in particular John Bridcut's new film, Britten's Endgame, which will be shown on November 14th.

I thought it might be of interest here.

Hope you don't mind my copying it, Mary.

Of course I don't. I must say I hope there'll be something on BBC2 as well. If they can celebrate 50 years of the National Theatre, why not 100 years of Britten?

Thank you, HG. A consummation devoutly to be wished, indeed!

"The BBC Symphony Orchestra will perform Britten’s War Requiem at the Royal Albert Hall on Remembrance Sunday ..."

........ hopefully a chorus will turn up too ..........

"As the gold card channel for arts, BBC Four features the most music programming on television and is the home of classical music on television which features in the heart of the schedule"

is that the half-hour or hour every Friday ?

...indeed, mercia, that is a staggering bit of, well, hyperbole would be an understatement. But I suppose we have to be grateful for the crumbs that fall, etc, etc

They must be dreaming if they believe that - normally Sky Arts 2 shows more music on any morning that BBC4 shows in a week.
I am also grateful for the crumbs that fall, but they should tone down the arrogance.

As mentioned by Sir Velo, arguably the best Britten documentary was shown on Sky Arts last night.

Simply staggering - tunnel vision, total denial.....

Indeed, a great documentary. I haven't seen it for many years but it's now saved to my Sky+ box for repeated viewing. For Skyphobes, there's a single copy available second hand on Amazon

There's also a rumour that there will be an item about Curlew River on Countryfile (BBC1), November 17th. This seems a bit esoteric for a programme largely aimed at farmers and lovers of country pursuits. I'm assuming it will be more about curlews and rivers than about a grieving Madwoman.

                        - reminds me of a review of Lady Chatterley's Lover in Gamekeeper Magazine - useful insights into life of Leicestershire gamekeeper unfortunately ruined by extraneous etc. etc......

One of my final 2 sightings of PP - a perf. of Curlew River at the Maltings in the mid 70s....

This reminded me that I have not seen anyone mention the Nova Music Opera production of Curlew River which is currently on tour. I saw it at Oxford on the 25th October - the first time I've seen one of the Church Parables, though I knew them well on LP in the 1970s. It's a wonderful production - Mark Milhofer's Madwoman is both convincing and very moving - and I would recommend it to anyone who is within access of it in the coming weeks.

This should be interesting as I love Britten's music and his (rather interesting) life. I have not read the two new biographies yet but I look forward to the programmes, John Bridcut especially.

I'm struggling to find the time the Bridcut is to be broadcast--does anyone know?
